Audition Notice
‘A View From the Bridge’
by
Arthur Miller
Directed by Mark Wilson
Production Management, Tamsin Fraser

Your invitation to become part of an extraordinarily talented team in what will be an extraordinary production.

Audition – Sunday 14th March. Theatre upstairs at NVT (see times below)
Recalls – Tuesday 16th March, 7.00pm – 10.00pm. Theatre upstairs

Brooklyn, the late 1940s. No one can tell Eddie Carbone that his feelings for Catherine, the niece he and his wife have brought up, are far more than paternal; he isn’t consciously aware of them himself. Even when Catherine falls in love with Rodolpho, an illegal immigrant from Italy, he won’t recognise the violent jealousy he feels. He becomes isolated, no one listening to his claims that Rodolpho’s love for Catherine is merely based upon a desire to avoid repatriation whilst offering him the opportunity to become an American citizen. The course is set for chaos and a tragedy that engulfs the whole community.

Characters:
Eddie Carbone: mid/late 40s. A longshoreman (docker), troubled, ill at ease with himself, a character unravelled by the action of the play.

Beatrice: Eddie’s wife, mid 40s; has the insight and wisdom to see what is taking place around her but remains powerless to stop it.

Catherine: The Carbone’s niece, 18, grows into the realisation that she must break her close relationship with Eddie if she is to establish her own identity. Rather than looking to cast an eighteen-year-old, the part will go to an actor who can convey a character who travels from naivety to young adulthood.

Alfieri: 60s. The all-seeing lawyer who both narrates the action and takes part within it. Compassion and a depth of human understanding.

Marco: late 30s/early to mid 40s. One of the two Italian illegal immigrants sheltered by the Carbones; a powerful, quiet figure who personifies the traditional Italian sense of family honour.

Rodolpho: late 20s/very early 30s. Marco’s younger brother, personifies a more modern, American-influenced outlook. If Marco represents traditional Italian values, Rodolpho is the future and his is an American future.

Neighbours, Immigration officials: walk-on parts with a few lines.

Audition timings:
Auditions will take place at the following times and will take the form of
workshops and prepared readings:

10.00 – 12.30 Catherine, Beatrice, Eddie, Rodolpho.
12.30 – 1.15 Alfieri
1.45 – 2.30 Marco
2.30 – 3.30 Louis, Mike, Immigration officers.

For the audition, you should be familiar with the lines rather than have them learnt. Apart from Marco and Rodolpho, who have Italian accents, the characters have New York Italian/American accents. Whilst some attempt at accent will be an obvious advantage, a lack of one at this stage should definitely not put you off auditioning.
