When the Layfayette siblings return to their late father’s crumbling Arkansas plantation home to settle his estate, tensions explode as they uncover artefacts among his belongings. Appropriate is a bold, biting and darkly comic play that explores legacy, race and what we choose to remember – or forget – about our past.
Characters - General American accent, unless stated
Antoinette “Toni” Lafayette – late 40s/early 50s: Eldest sibling. Executor of the estate. Incredibly fierce and tenacious, carrying the burden of being the “responsible” child. Defensive and emotionally volatile but deeply invested in her family legacy.
Rhys Thurston – late teens: Toni’s son. Lonely, troubled teenager, navigating divorce, guilt and isolation.
Beauregard “Bo” Lafayette – late 40s/early 50s: Middle sibling. Ambitious, seemingly successful big city elite. Stretched to breaking point by responsibility, resentment and expectations.
Francois “Franz” Lafayette – late 30s/early 40s: Youngest sibling. Recovering alcoholic and drug addict, estranged from his family for 10 years. Earnest, damaged and trying to make amends.
Rachael Kramer-Lafayette – late 40s: Bo’s wife. New York Jewish. Intelligent, assertive. Protective of her children and family image.
Cassidy Kramer-Lafayette – 13: Bo and Rachel’s teenage daughter. Smart, observant and emotionally attuned. New York.
Ainsley Kramer-Lafayette – 8: Bo and Rachel’s hyperactive son.
River Rayner – early 20s: Franz’s new-age fiancée. Free spirited, Oregon. Outwardly empathetic, inwardly calculating, tough.
Every role offers depth and complexity, in a play that is both confronting and very funny.
