As this is a small cast, please be prepared to work in a group audition setting and to read in with different actors, rather than individual slots for the initial round.
Rehearsals: There will be two weekday evening rehearsals and one weekend rehearsal.
It’s the annual ‘Birdman’ competition, in which costumed participants leap from the pier, and the busiest weekend of the year in a faded seaside town, but when would-be birdman Simon arrives he finds the B&B he has booked mysteriously closed for business. First produced in 2018, Caterpillar is a darkly funny, emotionally-charged drama which explores the moments when we find ourselves teetering on the edge.
Cast requirements
Maeve: Warm, outgoing and perceptive owner of Bay View B&B who has recently suffered a stroke. Playing age: mid-50s to mid-60s
Claire: Maeve’s smart, sharply witty and troubled daughter, married with a 4-year old son. Playing age: mid-30s
Simon: Gentle, earnest and determined but seemingly quite naïve man. Playing age: early to mid-20s.
We will be looking for actors who can balance humour with emotional depth and bring authenticity to what is a tightly-focussed, character-driven piece.
** The play deals with serious issues which some may find upsetting. There is a brief intimate scene between Simon and Claire.
This production will be an exciting, creative opportunity for everyone involved. It will be a team effort and one based on mutual respect and collaboration – theatre makers who are happy to be involved on that basis are most welcome.
