new venture pantomime group
The New Venture Pantomime Group was formed to devise an entirely
original pantomime,
to be performed at the NVT in January 2004. The group is running
a variety of workshops, brainstorming and creative sessions as well
as conducting its own research.
The group is exploring the essential ingredients of pantomime with
the intention of getting away from the usual commercial 'panto',
towards the more honest, historical roots of the pantomime. The
aim is to create a piece based on the theme of Brighton; past or
present, real or mythical. A variety of 'characters of Brighton'
will be conjured up; some famous, some lesser known and some that
are frankly fictitious!
Through its workshops the Pantomime Group aims to promote as wide
a range as possible of theatre skills, including: set design, music,
dance and movement, singing and voice work, instrumental performance,
prop making, comedy, make-up, costume, lighting and sound, writing,
acting and clowning.
Ambitions are high! The idea of developing a range of skills with
a common focus (and what could be more common than a pantomime?!)
is as much about the process - to learn stuff and have a lot of
laughs - as the end product, i.e. staggering, spectacular, impressive,
can't wait for the next one, etc.!
