The Memory Of Water
by Shelagh Stephenson
directed by Alex McQuillen-Wright
|
An
Olivier Award winner in 2000, this play is black comedy at
its best. Not only is it pant-wettingly funny, but its many
layers reveal some heart-breaking and poignant truths.
Three sisters return to their mothers home for her
funeral. Workaholic Mary, controlling Teresa and lippy, dippy
Catherine are joined by Teresas husband Frank and Marys
boyfriend Mike. Squabbles, resentments and long-buried secrets
emerge alongside memories that differ as much as the sisters
themselves.
As they all struggle to cope, their relationships reveal
what normal people do in abnormal times and chime
with us in a very recognisable way.

Being Frank
by Calolm MacGregor
directed by Nicholas Richards
Three friends gather for a wake. In their past lie dark secrets.
Is it best to let these rest in peace with the coffin
or to bring them to light and destroy lives? A tale touchingly
and humorously told. Intriguing to the end but whose
end?

A Rational Death
by Gareth Buckell
directed by Strat Mastoris
The near future. An election impends in a Western country.
Vanole, convicted murderer and certified schizophrenic, awaits
execution after the National Court decreed that he should
be forcibly medicated. International warfare looms. Can Dr.
Lewis, assigned by the State, convince the Appeal Court of
Vanoles lifelong insanity his only hope of escape?

Sunny Days
by Peter Poole
directed by Susan Moss
When a new social worker arrives in a house for vulnerable
youngsters, the effects are more disruptive than helpful.
They prefer the patient approach of an older man, who has
his own family problems. Sunny Days dips into
a quirky introverted world blending sympathy with a
darker edge.

Outlying Islands
by David Greig
directed by Nicholas Richards
|
On
the eve of World War 2, two young government ornithologists
arrive on a remote and uninhabited Scottish island to make
a scientific survey of the island's bird life. But it emerges
that the ministry has not been straight with them. It's not
research, but part of a chemical-weapons test. With them on
the island are Kirk, the authoritarian leaseholder, and his
niece, a young woman who dreams of the stars of silent comedy.
Left alone, surrounded by the vast Atlantic, they are briefly
drawn together before their innocence and youth is destroyed
forever.
