Copenhagen
by MICHAEL FRAYN
directed by Carl Boardman
|
 Take
two physicists -- the Nazi collaborator, Werner Heisenberg
and his mentor, the half-Jewish, Niels Bohr -- and bring them
together in Copenhagen in 1941. Their theories would ultimately
lead to the development of the atomic bomb. This compelling
set of dynamics brilliantly combines theatre with science
and philosophy in its examination of uncertainty and the paradox
of existence as sentient beings. The presence of Margrethe
Bohr only serves to enhance the tensions between both men
as she links the personal and political in a place where no
one has anything to lose.
Following a highly successful run at The National, this play
opens the NVT season with an extraordinarily forceful piece
of theatre.

Dealing With Clair
by MARTIN CRIMP
directed by Karl Rhys
|
 Today,
as the 1980s take their turn in the retro spotlight of popular
culture (with its typically rose-tinted filter), you'd be
forgiven for thinking that it was solely a decade of naff
bands, dubious fashion decisions and -- for a few -- hedonistic
money-making. In all, a daft but generally genial time. One
incident, however, suggests a much more complex view: the
disappearance in July 1986 of the Fulham estate agent, Suzy
Lamplugh. It is this event that acts as a springboard for
one of Martin Crimp's early plays: a creepy dissection of
the corrosive effect of the decade's particular brand of individualism
and the moral bankruptcy it entails. It's a sobering corrective
to any cosy, nostalgic vision of those heady times.

What I Just Shot
written & directed by HELEN NELDER
|
 John
is a war journalist, facing choices that will make or break
him. What I Just Shot tells the story of the 'pictures
that bleed', the wars that produce them and the people who
risk their lives to record such stories. This humorous, challenging
and visceral play explores the nature of truth, passivity,
propaganda and integrity in the context of immeasurable suffering.
John's moral dilemmas have implications for us all -- have
we become a nation of voyeurs?
Following the success of Helen Nelder's previous plays w@rn
and Help Me Alfie Moon, NVT presents the world premiere
of What I Just Shot.

Another Country
by JULIAN MITCHELL
directed by Laura Bennett
|
What happened to you when you were at school? What did you
learn? Who did you learn to be?
"Either you accept the system, or you try to change
it. There's no alternative."
"Why not? Why not both? Pretend to do one, while
you really do the other? .I'd have the last laugh. I'd be
revenged."
Set in a 1930s English public school for boys, this is a
play about love and lust; idealism and pragmatism; betrayal
and sacrifice; fear and pride. When its characters are forced
to confront the reality of life outside the school walls,
their pre-conceived ideas about the world they imagined they'd
live in and the men they thought they'd become are changed
forever.
Please note: there will be no performance
of this show on Tuesday, 14th December.
