The Servant
by Robin Maugham
directed by Ken Potter
|
Tony, a young, wealthy socialite, returns to England to collect his inheritance after six wasted years in Africa. His friend lines up a house in Chelsea ready for his arrival and also sets up a meeting to interview a prospective manservant. And that... is where... the fun... begins... What follows is an imploding social drama involving class manipulation, psychological mind-games, menace, role reversals, moral decay, and sexual decadence.
Robin Maugham's magnum opus, which takes a peek at the goings-on behind the staid oak doors of a Chelsea townhouse, comes to the NVT.

Love Letters
by A.R.Gurney
directed by Strat Mastoris
|
Love Letters is the story of a never-quite-fulfilled love affair between two upper class Americans, Andy and Melissa. It's told through a series of letters that the two have exchanged throughout their life, which are simply read out by the characters. The letters begin with Andy and Melissa aged about seven, in 1937, and continue for the next fifty years.
Sounds too simple? At first sight it is, but once you become involved in the progression of Andy and Melissa's lives, as recorded in the letters with all their hopes, assumptions and anxieties, the narrative is remarkably moving.

Iron
by Rona Munro
directed by Jerry Lyne
|
Josie has been looking for her mother Fay for 15 years. She finds her in prison. Josie has never been inside a prison before; Fay, her mother, is serving life for murder, the murder of Josie's father.
Iron is an intense psychological drama in which mother and daughter try to break through the barriers of time, memory and punishment which separate them. But between them lies the fact of murder. A murder Josie cannot remember and Fay has always tried to forget. Uncovering the memories they share is more dangerous than either of them can imagine.

Talking Dog
directed by Sarah Davies
|
An ordinary life told in extraordinary ways.
Talking Dog is a collectively devised piece that uses the magical possibilities of theatre to track Eddy's last 24 hours on earth, encompassing the surprising, the mundane and the surreal. Masked and unmasked characters along with some puppetry explore the highs and lows of life and all of its unexpectedly transformative moments. Here memory, reality and fantasy combine to conjure a heart-warming human tale of love, loss and the age-old relationship with Man's best friend.
